Rutgers
Hi, I'm also from Rutgers and saw you're at Google. Would love to learn about your journey and if you'd be open to referring me?"
Candidate A,斯坦福MS,4.0 GPA,所有技术面strong hire,但hm反馈"seems entitled, asked about team culture but感觉在评估我们"。
Candidate B,Rutgers undergrad,技术评分hire(非strong),但hm坚持"this is the kind of person you want in a war room"。

以Google L3/Meta E4/Amazon L4为基准,拆解到轮次:
Phone Screen(45-60
Google的phone screen特别看重"你是否会问'the array is sorted'这种问题"。
Virtual Onsite(4-5
Google
- 两轮coding(算法+数据结构)
- 一轮system design(L3可能是object-oriented design或简化system design)
- 一轮behavioral(Googliness)
Meta
- 两轮coding(其中一轮可能有debugging component)
- 一轮system design
- 一轮behavioral(Meta的"impact"和"boldness"框架)
Amazon
- 两轮behavioral(Leadership Principles深度挖掘)
- 一轮bar raiser(cross-functional,有权veto)
System design轮对于new grad通常是simplified,但Amazon L4可能要求设计URL shortener或rate limiter。
I'll use Redis because it's fast." For caching, I'm considering Redis vs Memcached. Redis offers persistence and richer data structures, but if we only need simple key-value with extreme throughput, Memcached might be simpler. Given the requirement for session storage with TTL, I'll go with Redis."
Amazon的LP面试典型结构:一个问题,你的回答,然后"what would you do differently",然后"what was the specific feedback you received",然后"how did you apply that learning in a different context"。
Rutgers
"Hi, I saw you took CS 352 with Professor XXX too. Trying to figure out if distributed systems is the right path for me."
第三,LinkedIn的Rutgers alumni search不是搜"Google employee",是搜"Rutgers + [目标公司] + 你能提供value的场景"。比如你要去一个conference,搜那个公司参会的人;
你要写blog about a technology,搜那个公司用该技术的人做quote source。
Insider场景二:一个真实的hiring manager视角。某fintech公司的engineering manager,Rutgers 2010届,每年收到30+内推请求。他的处理方式:LinkedIn message直接要内推的,全部忽略;
通过共同connection或mentorship program来的,优先回复;
I can tell in two sentences if this person understand what a referral means. It's not a coupon, it's my reputation."
错误版本(第2次聊天就提):"Hey, I saw your team is hiring. Would you mind referring me?"
正确版本(第4-5次互动,且你已更新进展):"I wanted to share an update—I applied to the L4 opening on your team's page. I've been preparing specifically for the system design round, and I think my project on [specific] aligns well with what you mentioned about your team's challenges. No pressure at all, but if you ever feel comfortable putting in a word, I'd appreciate it. If not, I completely understand and value our conversations regardless."
这段话的精妙之处:你已经applied(不是lazy ask),你展示了specific preparation(不是generic interest),你给了opt-out(降低对方psychological burden),而且你implied了continuity of relationship(不把这个请求作为关系的终点)。

算法pattern:Two pointers、Sliding window、BFS/DFS、DP(medium难度)、Union Find、Topological sort。
System design:对于new grad,重点不是设计Twitter,是理解core concepts——scalability fundamentals(horizontal vs vertical scaling)、database choices(SQL vs NoSQL trade-offs)、caching strategies、load balancing basics。
准备8-10个stories,覆盖:conflict resolution、failure and growth、leadership without authority、technical decision with incomplete information、disagreement with teammate。
Hi, I'm a recent Rutgers grad looking for opportunities at your company. Would you be open to referring me?"
"I saw you presented at [conference] on [topic]—I'm working on something related and noticed a connection to your approach on X. Would you be open to a brief chat?"
面试时被问"why this company",回答"it's a great company with smart people"。
"I chose to deep dive into distributed systems after my internship at X, where I saw firsthand how a single point of failure took down the payment processing for 4 hours. That led me to [project], which is why I'm particularly interested in your team's work on [specific]."
NEGLECTING THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN TECHNICAL ROUNDS
GOOD:Every round is a collaboration simulation. "Before I start, let me make sure I understand the constraints—are we assuming the input fits in memory?" "I'm thinking of two approaches here, let me walk you through the trade-offs before I commit." "This is my initial design—what concerns would you have if you were implementing this?"
FAQ
Built a web app for student organizations",而是"Built scheduling platform used by 12 student orgs, reducing booking conflicts by 40% and admin time by 5 hrs/week"。
残酷判断:你没有实习,意味着你的resume get a 10-second scan instead of 30-second。
Designed and implemented distributed key-value store from scratch, achieving 10K ops/sec on 3-node cluster, compared against Redis baseline"——即使这个project是课程要求的。
另一个路径:contribute to open source with measurable impact。
不是"contributed to React docs",是"identified and fixed accessibility bug in React component library, merged after 3 rounds of review, impacting 2M+ weekly downloads"。
I wanted to thank you again for the referral. I got the feedback that my system design needed more depth on trade-offs, which I've been focusing on since. Really appreciate you putting me forward regardless of the outcome." 这个message的价值:acknowledges their effort(not taking it for granted),shows growth mindset(not defensive),leaves door open(not awkward silence)。
大多数校友会appreciate this closure,而且你在6-12个月后再次联系时,这个professional handling会work in your favor。 Rutgers alumni groups are small enough that reputation sticks。
即使vague,"work on system design depth"也比nothing好。
把这个feedback share with你的校友,showing you're treating their referral seriously and learning from it。
