Then the interviewer asks: "What metric would you move to improve this product?" You say "growth." And you just lost the offer. Section 2: The Three Most Dangerous "Growth" Traps (And What to Say Instead)

Trap 1: "I'd grow DAU/MAU"

Why it's dangerous: DAU is a vanity metric in most product contexts during an interview. It's too high-level to reveal why users stay or leave. Trap 2: "I'd optimize for engagement"

Why it's dangerous: Engagement is a bucket—not a lever. At Netflix, engagement means time spent. At Uber, engagement means trips per week. Better alternative: Use the HEART framework (Google's own creation!): pick Happiness, Engagement, Adoption, Retention, Task Success. For a Stripe checkout flow, your metric should be Task Success (checkout abandonment rate), not Engagement (time on page). Time on page is actually a negative signal there.

Trap 3: "I'd run an A/B test and pick the variant with higher growth"

Why it's dangerous: This answer ignores metric tradeoffs. Every PM at Pinterest knows that increasing pin reshare rate by 5% might decrease comment interactions by 12% (since reshare-heavy feeds dilute community). If you don't call out the negative metric upfront, you look like you've never run a real A/B test.

Better alternative: Say "I would set a guardrail metric—for example, I'd move shares per session as my primary, but I'd cap reported content rate at 0.1% increase. This structure works because it mirrors how real PMs think at Microsoft, Apple, or Stripe. It shows you understand that metrics are nested choices, not abstract aspirations.
