Caltech

这篇文章写给在Pasadena校园里,正在Google Calendar里标记"recruiting season"的Caltech本科生和研究生。你可能在CMS 356的课间刷LinkedIn,看到同实验室的学长去了Meta做PM,心里纳闷"他代码没我写得好";

Tell me about a time you had to make a decision without data",候选人开始讲"首先我定义了什么是data,然后我意识到在量子力学框架下观测本身会影响结果,所以严格来说不存在没有data的决策……"

She's clearly smart, but I'm not sure she can prioritize when everything is on fire." Caltech kids often need a year to unlearn perfectionism."

一个真实的场景: recruiter问"what are your expectations",错误回答是" I'm open, what do you typically offer?" Based on my research and conversations, I'm targeting a base in the 130-145 range with competitive equity, understanding that structure varies by company."

recruiter的KPI是fill the pipeline with qualified candidates,不是judge你的智商。他们手里的checklist通常包括:graduation timeline, work authorization, location preference, why PM not eng。

一个真实的screen对话:recruiter问"what's your favorite product",Caltech candidate花了7分钟分析Google Search的ranking algorithm。recruiter在notes里写"technical but no product angle"。

第二轮:Phone Interview with PM (45-60分钟)

典型格式:15分钟behavioral,30分钟case(product design或product sense),5分钟Q&A。

Case题的经典陷阱:"design a better alarm clock for blind people"。Caltech学生的典型错误路径:立刻跳到你熟悉的某个技术solution("I would use ultrasonic sensors..."),然后被面试官打断"but what problem are we solving?"。

面试官在notes里常写的: "jumps to solution" vs. "good at scoping"。

通常包括:product design, analytical/case, behavioral/leadership, 和一位senior stakeholder(可能是Director PM或Eng Manager)。

I'm looking for someone who can live in ambiguity for 30 minutes without panicking." 具体场景:面试官给"design a product for remote workers"。

你要在45分钟内走完:user segmentation → primary persona → their top 2-3 pain points → solution prioritization → success metrics → launch plan。Caltech学生常犯的错误是在user segmentation就陷入分析 paralysis——"there are so many dimensions to segment by..."——然后时间到了还在segment。

Leadership/behavioral轮的考察重点是conflict resolution和influence without authority。 Tell me about a time you disagreed with an engineer。

一个debrief里的真实评价: "He told a great story about convincing a senior engineer, but never mentioned what the user impact was. I'm not sure he fundamentally cares about users."

"What would you do if you joined and found the team morale is low?"

How would you improve Instagram Stories?"

Caltech response): "Well, the compression algorithm for video stories could be optimized, because currently if you analyze the bitrate allocation..."

正确版本: "I'd start by clarifying which user segment and which business metric we're optimizing for. If it's creator retention among power users in emerging markets, I'd look at upload success rate and loading time, because my hypothesis is that bandwidth constraints cause drop-off before they even get to content quality questions. If it's ad revenue in mature markets, I'd look at engagement depth and ad integration formats. Let me walk you through the first scenario..."

  1. 找到3个正在做PM的校友做mock interview,要求他们在结束后给harsh feedback——不是"that was good",而是"here's where I lost interest in your story"。
  1. 每天花20分钟用随机product做structured analysis:who is the user, what is their job-to-be-done, how does this product fail them, what would you test?
  1. 研究目标公司的最新earnings call和PM blog posts,不是为了recite facts,是为了understand their current strategic priorities。

面试里自然地reference一句"hitting the same notes as your Q3 earnings mention on AI infrastructure"会让你从candidate变成informed candidate。

Most Caltech students can't.

BAD:在Google PM面试中,candidate花了15分钟分析Google Photos的ML pipeline architecture,提到"the convolutional neural network for face recognition has O(n^2) complexity issues at scale",然后看着面试官期待认可。

I asked about product strategy, he gave me a thesis defense."

Google Photos' core value prop is 'remember everything without effort.' The strategic question is how to extend that from 'search my photos' to 'do something with my memories.' One angle I'd explore: the gap between having 10,000 photos and ever seeing 99% of them. Hypothesis: users want curation, not more storage. I'd validate by looking at sharing rates and revisit patterns..."

BAD: "In my research project, I designed the entire system, wrote all the code, and presented at the conference. My advisor was very impressed." Hiring committee note: "no evidence of collaboration, possible red flag for PM role."

GOOD: "Our lab was stuck on a reproducibility issue for three months. I noticed the problem wasn't the algorithm but how we were documenting experimental conditions. I proposed we pilot a structured logging protocol, but knew I needed buy-in from the two postdocs who had been there longer. I did one-on-one conversations to understand their concerns—turns out they had tried something similar and it failed because of overhead. We co-designed a lighter version, I volunteered to maintain it for the first month to prove it wouldn't add burden, and within six weeks our reproducibility rate improved dramatically."

Tell me about a time you failed",candidate回答:"I wouldn't call it a failure, but I learned that I should have communicated earlier..."

GOOD: "I organized a campus event that had 20% of projected attendance. The failure was clear: I assumed that because I posted on the House Slack, people would come. I didn't account for the fact that my target audience—first-years—weren't on that channel. I spent the next day personally reaching out to 30 people to understand what channels they actually used, discovered it was Instagram group chats, and rebuilt our outreach strategy around that. The next event was at capacity. What I now do for any product launch: map the actual communication channels of my target users, not assume they're where I am."

FAQ

Caltech

设置calendar reminder在7月15日:开始改简历、reach out to校友、了解哪些公司来campus recruiting。

PM hiring的signal不是"have you done PM before",而是"can you do PM"。

Research经历如果framed correctly,是stronger signal than a random PM internship at no-name startup。

Built a Python pipeline for processing telescope data",而是"Identified that 40% of research time was spent on data cleaning; led design of automated pipeline that reduced preprocessing time by 75%, freeing up 2 FTE for science analysis. Negotiated priority with PI against competing project by demonstrating user impact on downstream researchers."

CS degree is better for PM",而是"quantitative rigor有帮助,但field本身不重要"。

但cost是opportunity cost of one year of PM career progression——在硅谷,early career的每年compounding效应显著。

一个debrief里的真实对话:hiring manager问candidate "why did you take an extra year",candidate说 "I wanted to be better prepared"。

Hiring manager later: "I want people who are hungry to start, not optimizing for perfect readiness." 另一个candidate的回答: "I spent a year at [startup] because I realized my research training gave me analytical tools but I needed to validate whether I enjoyed the ambiguity of product decisions. That year confirmed it, and here's what I learned about myself..."
