Never say “I’ll defer to engineering.”
That’s abdication.
Instead, say: “My instinct is to prioritize consistency here because this data drives billing. I’d stress-test that with the engineering lead.”
You’re showing judgment, then collaboration.

You don’t need to code.
You need to care about the consequences of the code.
How much technical detail is actually expected?
You need enough technical vocabulary to discuss trade-offs, not enough to pass a backend SWE screen.
At Google, PMs are not scored on their ability to sketch a consensus algorithm.
