GOOD: “Five users mentioned dark mode, but none stopped using the app because it was missing. Engineering estimates six sprint weeks. We’d rather invest that in push notification personalization, which our data shows drives 18% of re-engagement.”
Mistake: Treating feedback as priority. Users ask for features. PMs diagnose needs.
BAD: In a trade-off question, saying, “We can A/B test both options.”
GOOD: “We’ll test the high-impact, low-effort one first. Option A could increase conversion by 15% but takes 10 weeks. Option B might lift it by 5% but takes two weeks and unblocks a partner team. We do B first because it has negative opportunity cost.”

Is user empathy enough for product sense?
No. Empathy tells you users are frustrated. Product sense tells you whether the frustration is a solvable bottleneck or a symptom of a deeper issue.
